What You Can Learn From Yoda

Dear friend,

I am a huge Star Wars fan and can't wait to see the final episode some time today.

Anyway, a couple of nights ago, my girlfriend Rachael informed me that she had never seen the The Phantom Menace.  Being the caring and dutiful boyfriend that I am, I ran out to the local Best Buy and picked up a copy.

We both plunked down on the couch with a bucket of popcorn, cranked up the surround sound, and watched the movie on my big screen TV.

Although it was not my favorite Star Wars movie I did pick up on something that was very interesting that I must have missed the last time I watched it.

At one point in the movie young Anakin Skywalker (who eventually becomes the dreaded Darth Vader) is being interviewed by Yoda.

Yoda says that he feels fear in young Anakin.  He then adds that "Fear leads to anger, anger leads to hate, hate leads to suffering."

That was an excellent observation from the little squishy, green, E.T. looking Jedi Master.

As I was watching this it immediately reminded me of dog behavior.  Aggression is usually the result of fearful behavior.  Most of the dog bites I have experienced have been from fearful dogs.

If a puppy comes into a house and is not properly socialized, if he or she is not trained in obedience with positive methods, if punishment is used to solve every behavior problem, there is a good chance the little guy is going to become fearful.

There is only so much that a dog can handle, the fearful behavior will eventually result in aggressive behavior (anger) the aggressive behavior will eventually lead to a bite (hate) the bite will lead to someone suffering, most of the time a child.
